Water is life.
E-Trade is well known for their innovative commercials with the E-Trade baby. Thanks to a timely ad during Super Bowl XLII that saw a record setting number of new accounts created the next day, the E-Trade baby has become one of the most recognizable and identifiable ads on TV.
This ad, which ran during the 2010 Super Bowl, starts with the baby talking with his girlfriend on a webcam. He apologizes for not calling her back, but she isn’t buying it.
She asks, “That milkaholic Lindsay wasn’t over?”
“Lindsay?”
“MILK-A-WHAT?”
Some spilt milk led to Lindsay Lohan suing E-Trade, claiming that the ad pokes fun at her life and that she has “single-name recognition”. Whether you think E-Trade was mocking Lohan’s struggles or not, we can all agree that the E-Trade ads are some of the best on TV.
I do think this ad does a good job portraying Google as an Orwellian Big Brother that emotionlessly collects our personal secrets and shamelessly regurgitates it as ads to us.
But isn’t Microsoft the once and future ‘Evil Empire’?
